Come participate at the Denver Green School Community Farm!
Regular volunteer days:
Every Friday and Saturday, 10am-12pm, April 15-Oct 28. The whole family is welcome to come help with whatever's going on in the field!
CSA Food Shares:
It's like pre-paid grocery shopping, all summer and fall! Buy a share in the farm and come once a week, every week throughout the season, to get a portion of what's harvested! Shares of farm-fresh veggies, herbs, and flowers are $425 (about $20/week), and extra options from other local farms for eggs, fruit, meat, bread, mushrooms, coffee and tea are also available: check out Sprout City Farms' website for more info and to sign up.
Support the Farm Stand (starting in August):
Every Wednesday from the start of school to Halloween, 6th graders help run a Farm Stand in the school parking lot featuring fresh veggies, herbs, and flowers from our farm, plus fruit and eggs from other local farms. SNAP purchases are doubled in value, and we keep prices reasonable and accessible to all!
Please get in touch with Farmer Meg (720-319-8126; [email protected]) if you have any questions or input regarding the farm and its programs!
4-26 -17 Community Day!
Thank you to everyone that was able to make it to Community Day. Our insect houses look great. We will continue to work on them this week and next. Every kindergarten student will have a chance to help with our houses. We love helping the tiniest creatures in our garden.
4-19-17
Kindergarten is learning about more insects that help our gardens grow. We have spent this past week comparing butterflies and bees. We have learned that they both go through metamorphosis, drink nectar, and spread pollen. It is amazing how such tiny creatures make a huge difference in our lives! We are very excited to build a safe place for these creatures to live in our garden this weekend at Community Day!
4-5-17 Community Day is coming!
Saturday, April 22 is DGS's Community Day! Please plan to join us for a day of service and fun! Kindergarten will be building insect houses for the garden and farm. We are looking for supplies to build these houses. We are looking for cinder blocks, bricks, pieces of wood, bamboo sticks, terra cotta pots, thick cardboard pieces, etc. Pretty much anything an insect could crawl in to and feel safe. Please send any materials in to Mrs. Wagner's classroom. Thanks for your help!

10-6-16 Special Happenings in Kindergarten
Gifted and Talented Education Denver Green School Lana von Tersch Gifted and Talented Specialist [email protected]
Dear Parents/Guardians:
This is to inform you that your child will soon be given the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test (NNAT3) at school. The assessment will be given to all Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th graders in Denver Public Schools. It is one of the many measures that can be used as a part of a larger body of evidence to identify students who may need gifted educational services.
The NNAT3 is a brief nonverbal test of general intellectual ability that uses progressive matrices to allow for a culturally neutral evaluation of students’ nonverbal reasoning and general problem-solving ability, regardless of the individual student’s primary language, education, culture, or socioeconomic background.
The value of nonverbal assessments is that they can provide reliable and valid evaluations of any student’s ability that is not dependent on a their ability to read, write, or speak. It does not depend on proficiency in any particular language. The test will be administered online and does not test a student’s computer literacy.
The NNAT3 test will be administered at DGS the week of October 10, 2016 for all Kindergarten students.
Sincerely,
Lana Von Tersch
9-29-16 Field Trips are Coming!
This week we began reading The Knight at Dawn from the MagicTree House series. We have worked on our comprehension skills by writing a summary of the chapter read aloud each day. We have also had the opportunity to act out what happens in the story each day at centers.

May 13, 2015
Thanks to all our chaperones who came on the field trip! We had a blast learning about bees!
May 7, 2015
This week kindergartners got to spend time on the farm helping Farmer Meg. We went out in small groups to take turns raking the paths to help keep our farm commons healthy. Next week we will be heading to Hudson gardens to meet with Bee Keeper Bob. He will talk to us about his bees and show us an actual beehive. We have already learned much about bee jobs and how bees are important pollinators for plants. We think Bee Keeper Bob will be impressed at all that we know. Later in the week we will again visit Farmer Meg to see if we can find any pollinators hard at work in the farm or gardens at DGS.
4-22-15 What an exciting week!
Thank you to everyone who came to DGS for community day. It was great to see so many families. Students worked hard to prepare for the day. We even got to have a dress rehearsal the day before by demonstrating our learning to our 4th and 5th grade students. We also got to go to their classrooms to see their presentations as well.
Our field trip to Denver Botanic Gardens was a huge success! Many students said it was the best field trip ever!! We were lucky to have cool sunny weather and spent the majority of the day outdoors in the gardens. Thanks to all of our parent/grandparent chaperones students were able to explore the gardens in groups of 2-3 students. This gave all students the opportunity to move around the gardens at their own pace. We even got to go inside to the tropical rainforest area. Each class also had an hour long class on pollinators. Look for their documentation (a folded sheet about pollinators and flower parts) in Thursday folders.

For example, the students will teach their family how to measure the distance that frogs can hop, sing a song about bees and plant some flowers for butterflies. There will be even more surprises there as well!

10-29-14 Education for Sustainability: Healthy Relationships
In kindergarten, we will be starting a new Education for Sustainability (EfS) unit on Healthy Relationships. This unit will focus on:
1.Creating a positive view of the self by knowing we are all important members of the community and unique individuals.
2.Learning how to form strong friendships with peers (i.e. friends give compliments, friends are helpful, friends play safe, etc.).
3.Learning why healthy relationships are important (i.e. we have friends to listen when we are sad and friends can teach us new things, like drawing hearts).
4.Learning how to acknowledge and express our feelings (i.e. angry, sadness, frustration, anxiety, etc.)
As for assessment, we will be interviewing children to see if they can define a healthy friendship. We will also take videos of the children being a good, kind friend to one another. At the end of the unit, we will celebrate our classroom community by having a friendship day!

Back to School Information
We’re so excited for the 2014-2015 school year! Here are a few need-to-know pieces:
Back to School Night
Kindergarten will hold a back-to-school night the same night and time as the rest of the school, on Monday, August 18th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm.
Even if you are familiar with the school or the program, please plan on attending, as this is a wonderful opportunity to meet other families in the class.
Home Visits
If your family is new to DGS, we will be calling to schedule a home visit. These are 20-30 minute visits, and are an opportunity to discuss hopes and dreams you have for your child.
First Day(s) of School
To help everyone ease into the school year, we will have a staggered start this year. This means: during the first two days of school (Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd) your child will attend only ONE day from 7:55am-12:45pm. You will be responsible for finding care for the afternoon and the day your child is not attending. No other childcare will be available at DGS. Those students attending school on Thursday, August 21st will need to provide their own transportation at pick up. There will be NO bus service at the 12:45pm pick up on Thursday. If your child will be riding the bus starting the first day of school please contact the kindergarten teachers and your child’s first day will be Friday, August 22nd as there will be bus pick up at 12:45pm on Friday. A list of students who will be attending each day will be available at Back to School Night after class lists have been made.
